The starter's job is to crank the engine period it has nothing to do with engine performance/drive-ability.

Recheck the timing belt could be stripped out. Do this if it has a distributor-remove the distributor cap and crank engine over-is the rotor turning? If not the timing belt went southbound.

First time it starts and stays running, shut it off come back five minutes later and it will not start or will sound as if the battery has drained out barely turning over. I am positive it is not the battery or the alternator. No fuses blown and starter is good. Now what?

Double check all connections at battery and starter motor end if okay the engine could be seizing up or the ignition switch could be failing.

When it does not start right away, check the spark at the plugs and determine if there is spark and if it is strong. I assume that the vehicle is getting fuel but it might not be getting all that it needs or more than it needs. Start with the spark and then you might want to have a fuel pressure check done.

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 173,000 miles

second gear started to slip, but only when I slow down and going between twenty five and thirty mph, and when I hit the gas to go it would slip. So I bought it somewhere to have it looked at and they told me that I needed a new transmission. The guy told me he could get a rebuilt transmisison for $850.00. So I let this guy do this and when I got it back it would shift really hard into every gear. Even when it down shifted. So the guy tells me to bring it in and he will look at it. So the night before I have to bring it in, I leave my house, dont even get a quarter of a mile down the road and I heard a like a pop sound but it was not loud, so I hit the gas and I have nothing the car just came to a stop. But the engine was still running. So I turned it off and tried to start it and it kicks over but does not start. So I just want to know what is wrong with it some people say it is the transmission, some say the timing belt and it seized. If you could tell me that would be great? Thanks Kaila

But the motor was still running. So I turned it off.

If its the timing belt I do not think it will continue to run before you shut it down with the key.

Try below:

Get a carburetor cleaner and spray into the carburetor or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and shut off? If not disconnect a spark plug wire or two and ground it to the engine have helper crank engine over do you have a snapping blue spark? If so you have a fuel problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing.

Fuel pump and Injector/s checks out-start checking the ignition system-power to coil, coil/s itself, distributor pick-up, control module, cam and crankshaft sensors.

If both fuel and spark is present check the valve and ignition timing, this will lead you to problems with compression and valves opening and closing at the wrong time.
