Can a catalytic converter completely blow out the substrate in about 10 years?
Failed a California Smog Test. HC's were too high. Cleaned the throttle body and IAC, Replaced spark plugs and wires, changed the oil and filter, replaced the thermostat and housing along with the upper and lower radiator hoses and a new air filter. The car was running great, more power, better mileage etc. I drove it about a week and went back for a recheck FAIL exact same issue high HC's Took it to a shop and had it hooked up to a full featured OBD2 scanner. Everything looked great, but the catalytic converter looked like it was worn out. Bought the proper CAT, had it installed and took a look at the old CAT and realized it was hollow "No Substrate"!
Hence: Can a catalytic converter completely blow out the substrate in about 10 years?
