The first start up of the day the car will sometimes run rough and have a smell as though it is running rich. It will at times put on the service engine soon light on. When warmed up runs well. At times the check engine soon light will extinguish.

You need to have the computer scanned to identify where the problem is coming from.

Let me know what you find.

Thais good news. Let me know if it happens again. If the check engine light comes on again, try to get it to a nationally recognized parts store to have them scan it while it is on. Most parts stores will scan it for free, and it should identify where the problem is coming from.

Let me know if you have other questions.

My 96 Sable wagons CEL came on, so I went to Auto Zone to have the code checked. They told me it was the O2 Sensor after the catalitic converter, bank #1. I purchased a new Bosch O2 sensor fromthem and they told me to disconnect the battery and then change it, code will reset. I did that and after 19 miles the CEL came on again. I am assuming the "new" O2 sensor is not defective. Do I need to have the CEL "reset" some other way?
Thanks!

Go back and get the code read again. If it's the same ask to get paid to replace it again if it's defective, or ask for another guess.
If it is not the same then post what code you get.

There may be an evap code now present since that monitor can not run without the first code being addressed.

The service light will not go off despite the fact that it came on prior to the usual 5000km service schedule and when checked, the oil, radiator fluid, transmission fluid and brake fluid were at their correct levels. The car runs well and makes no noise.
The garage ran a check and were uncertain of the cause. They were able to switch the light off but it has come on again and has switched off for a short period and has returned again.
The car mechanic says that there is nothing to stop us from driving the car as it runs well but we are concerned about that light.
I should be grateful if you can help solve the problem.
Thank you in anticipation,
Bryan Naylor

Hi Bryan,

Have you had the codes read since it came back on? If not go by your local parts store and have them scan it for you. Most will do it free. If have any codes write them down and post.

I have a check engine light on, not all the time. When it is on the transmission is not shifting right. I can only get up to 45mph at 3000rpm. What can this be?

No I don't have one of those. The attached image is how I did it. I used a jumper wire instead of a test light.

Looks like. Your going to have to try a different way or you may to just get a scanner that will read your car. If the lights coming on and its acting up we need to start with what codes it has.

I also have a 1995 Mercury Sable that I'm desperatley trying to get back on the road. I got insurance and tag on it and broke the next day. Check engine light comes on after running a few minutes and runs bad with black smoke coming out of tail pipe. It seems like it's not shifting right. It will only do 45mph at 3000rpms. I tried to pull the code with a friends scanner and it wont pull. I've tried jumping the eec and using the scanner. My friends scanner is a snap on with right adaptor and computer card.
