I need to know if a bad seal can cause a loud exhaust leak or if my catalytic conveter is bad

Have the exhaust system inspected by your mechanic or at an exhaust system specialty shop. There is a metal seal that allows the engine to rock and flex the joint, but those rarely fail. A rust hole is more likely.
