On my 02 celica, about 5 months ago I replaced the motor with one with only 32,000mi runs great BUT the next day the speedo started to flicker it would work then stop but always start working again within seconds. So about a month of that and it stop working all together. I have replaced the speed censor on the tranny and tried 3 dash clusters the tack works great it's only the cruse control, speedo and odometer. I have gone through every fuse twice or three times all the wiring looks good all the way back to the fuse box, I had to cut open the wire loom and still all good! Please help i'm about to take it to the dealer because the easy fix is not so easy anymore. Also every time I fill up with gas now and only when I fill up the tank the car will die within 30sec of starting? But after a start or two it runs great again.

Hi
Is there voltage on Red/Blue wire at VSS? As for fuel tank maybe faulty purge or air valve when you fill up do you stop when fill handle stops or pump a few more into tank.
Let me know

Ok, all I needed was alittle help. It was the back up censer on the tranny, I unpluged it and put a new fuse in and it works great. Now the fule isue. I live in oregon we dont pump r gas, I like it that way lol. But sometimes they cap it off and other times as soon as it clicks off they hang it up. This also started rite after I put in the new motor.

CELICA PROBLEM
2001 Celica GT automatic. Bought it a little over a year ago. The speedometer and odometer would work sometimes and not others. At the same time the engine light would come on and the car, (automatic) would not shift into fourth gear. All these things would happen together. Sometimes everything would work... The meters would start working, the engine light would go off, and the car would shift into fourth. After a period off sometimes working and sometimes not, it stopped working permanently. So, the car has non working speed and odometer, the engine light stays on, and the car will not shift to fourth gear, (other three gears are fine).
I've replaced the speed sensor. My mechanic doesn't know what it is. He mentioned something about a "scope" that the dealer would have to trouble shoot the problem. The dealer told me the problem was due to the fourth gear being worn and I'd need a new transmission. I'm not buying that diagnosis. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Get a scan done and let me know the EXACT trouble code for the MIL indicating and I will see what I can come up with.

I don't think the cause of the fault is mechanical. More likely the non working speedometer is related to it. When speedometer does not work, the trans would not know when to shift so it becomes errati at times.

What do you have for codes?

Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminals "A" and "B", and between "C" and "D" while indicator is resting on stopper pin.
Resistance should be 250 ohms between each set of terminals.
If resistance is not as specified, replace speedometer.
Ensure tires are correct size and inflated properly.
Place vehicle on standard speedometer tester. Compare tester with speedometer readings.
If vehicle speedometer readings are not within allowable range, replace speedometer.
If speedometer does not operate at all, check vehicle speed sensor

Your are right at the transition point where Toyota switched from cables to electronic senders.

Cable systems usually have an upper and lower cable and lower cable is usually the cause. Toyota should be able to get new ones.

My speedometer randomly stopped working while I was driving down the highway today, and my car is not shifting into 3rd gear. The shifting problem happened before the speedometer went out, but I'm curious as to if they could be connected.
What could cause my speedometer to stop working, and could my shifting problem be connected?

Hello and thanks for the donation

you may have a faulty vehicle speed sensor causing these symptoms. The VSS does interact with the transmission as well as the speedometer.
