Transmission shift light D4 light stays on

When I start my car, the D4 light is on no matter what gear I am in. I have to start driving the car in one then switch to D4. What is the problem?

The D4 light also acts as an error warning indicator.

Since the light is on, you need to extract the error code to know what has gone wrong.

I went to drive yesterday and it wouldn't go above 30 mph without the rpm's going up really high (like above 6). I drove it home (after giving it a rest for about a half hour while someone came to check it out) and the rpm's were high for a few miles while I did between 30 mph and 40 mph, but after then I was able to go around 60 mph and the rpm's were normal. All of the windows except the drivers side incidentally stopped working after the rpm problem began. Any suggestions? Thanks!

For the windows, check if the swith for disabling the other windows have been accidently turned off.

Did you check the transmission fluid level?
Is there any indicators showing on dash?

Good idea. I will go do that in a second. I am letting the car warm up right now because the panel where the buttons for the windows are on the drivers side may have gotten wet and then froze because the driver's side window does not close all the way.

The transmission fluid was nearly full yesterday and there are no indicators on the dash.

The driver door not closing all the way could be due to a bad door glass regulator. Manually push the glass up by holding the glass between your hands and if it moves freely, the regulator is bad.

The others could be frozen due to the switch getting wet or the main switch has been turned off.

As to transmission, you would need to monitor the situation and when problem occurs, try shifting to D3 to see if the engine picks up speed easily. Does the Reverse occasionally takes forever to engage?

My D4 light on the dashboard stays on. Feels like the e bkake is on.

If you shift it manually same deal but if you disconnect the battery over night it shifts good for a bout a 1/2 hour. I own my own tow an repair shop.

Replace the shift solenoid on the side of the case, this is a big problem with Honda.

You read transmission codes same as CEL codes through diagnostic connector. The d4 light flashes codes.

I have attached info on the two codes. Code 2 is for the lock up control solenoid B. I have attached information on check out of both A and B and how to change.

Test For Lock Up Control Solenoid A & B

NOTE: Lock-up control solenoid valves A and B must be removed/replaced as an assembly.

Disconnect the connector from the lock-up control solenoid valve A/B.

Measure the resistance between the No.1 terminal (solenoid valve A) of the lock-up control solenoid valve connector and body ground, and between the No. 2 terminal (solenoid valve B) and body ground.
Replace the lock-up control solenoid valve assembly if the resistance is out of specification.
If the resistance is within the standard, connect the No. 1 terminal of the lock-up control solenoid valve connector to the battery positive terminal. A clicking sound should be heard. Connect the No. 2 terminal to the battery positive terminal. A clicking sound should be heard. Replace the lock-up control solenoid valve assembly if no clicking sound is heard.

Service and Repair
Notes

Remove the mounting bolts and lock-up control solenoid valve assembly.
NOTE: Be sure to remove or replace the lock-up control solenoid valves A and B as an assembly.

Check the lock-up control solenoid valve oil passages for dust or dirt and replace as an assembly, if necessary.
Clean the mounting surface and oil passages of the lock-up control solenoid valve assembly and install a new filter/gasket.
Check the connector for rust, dirt or oil and reconnect it securely.

Code 15 is the main shaft speed sensor. I have attached info on how to check that also.

Remove the 6 mm bolt from the transmission housing, then remove the mainshaft or countershaft speed sensor.
Replace the O-ring with a new one before reinstalling the mainshaft or countershaft speed sensor.

Found open in wire at speed sensor, replaced sensor, no more code 15. Checked lock up solenoid as per instructions, and checked good, 13 ohms to ground and a good click, and removed and reinstalled. Still have code 2 and d4 light went out, tried another computer from friends wrecking yard, but it did not bring up code 2 or 15 but d4 light will come on. Weird. Other computer out of 1993 Honda automatic.

D4 light flashing, solenoids check okay, when driving about four miles or so speed drops to a max of 40 mph and rpm can go to 4,000 or 5,000 and can shift into first, second or third and no difference. I shift into neutral, without stopping and restart the engine and everything okay for next several miles and have to repeat same procedure. The code on the light is 2. What is voltage to solenoids as maybe run a wire to them, to inside vehicle, to my voltmeter, while driving. Thanks

Sometimes when I drive and come to a stop the tranny will disingage, but if I turn the car off and on it will reingage? Can you please tell me what might cause this or if it is the tranny starting to go out?

Replaced computer and that took care of code 2, still getting code 15, even after changing bad mainshaft speed sensor, and very erratic shifting. I put a quart of trans x in and drove 75 miles, then drained tranny and refilled with with dexron v1 and no more shifting problem and no code 15, with 400 miles, since changing fluid. Thanks for your help.
