My car was sitting in the driveway for about 4 months needing a starter. The battery died during this time. I finally had the starter replaced and the battery charged, but now the cluster panel is not working. Is there something that needs to be reset since it was without power for so long? I checked and replaced the Cluster fuse in the trunk even though it was not bad and as I anticipated, no change.

First, try disconnecting the battery, both cables. Touch the cables together for 10 seconds or so, and reconnect. If that doesn't work the cluster needs to be rebuilt here is a video that will show you what to do on a similar car.

Please let us know what happens.

Instrument panel is blank. Initially, the top icons are there, but never any mileage, speedometer, etc. Just quit working all of a sudden.

Hey ELAINE,

It sounds like you have am instrument cluster that has gone out, please check all fuses before you replace it or have it rebuilt. This is a common problem.

Let us know how it goes so it will help others.

Best, Ken

Check the Rly Ignition 1 fuse (10 A), and the Cluster fuse (20A) fuses in the fuse panel located on the left side of the trunk
Do the radio and AC/Heat control lights still work and can you dim those with the control?
If they are all good, Set a book over the twilight sensor in the defroster duct on the dash. They go bad and will make the dash shut down.
Try pressing the "off" and "warmer" buttons on the heater control panel for five to six seconds, that should initiate a cluster test that will light up all the lights and segments on the dash (except the check engine light).

If none of the above make the dash show signs of life, it is time to repair or replace the cluster. One thing to be aware of, with that cluster you cannot just grab a used one from a salvage yard and plug it in. The cluster is VIN number locked and stores the information for the security key, just plugging a used unit in will tell the computer to not allow the engine to run (thanks GM!), they have to be reprogrammed by a dealer.

There are a lot of companies that rebuild these clusters as they are a common failure item as Ken noted.

Another option is to buy a panel from the same year and split the panel. You basically remove your cluster, take the front display sections off, split the replacement unit. Put the working display parts onto your rear section and put it back together. I have done this twice. Once it worked the other time it didn't, it depends on where the actual failure is.

One nice thing about the repair option is that generally they also replace failure prone parts with better ones.

Here are a couple that I have used with good results, not saying to use them but it can be difficult to find these places if you haven't needed them before.

If you need to geta jump to start it then charge your battery and have it checked. It sounds as if that is bad or not charging. That cna cause alot of problems by itself. Digital dashs if they don't work, usually have ot be pulled out and sent int to be repaired if it's not a fuse or such. Check fuses #7& #16 to see if they are burnt out.

My devilles digital information lights, fuel center data, climate control center, speedometer and mileages, etc, all of a sudden quit working. We have checked all the fuses, and they are all good. However we have not checked and of the fuses or relays that are found behind the right sound insulator. According to the fuse panel, it should have been fuse 7, which also controls the AC, but even though the climate control center digital lights are not working, the AC will still turn on. Is there something else we can check or do to locate and fix this problem? Without the fuel center data digital readout lights working, I have no idea of how much gas is in my car.

There's a relay block behind the far right side of the dash to the right of the glovebox. Also look at the images I have attached.

The digital dash on my 98 cadillac deville is showing low voltage (about 10v) but if I check at the battery it shows normal voltage. When I drive all the red lights on the dash will come on for a couple of seconds like when you first turn the car on, the dash will blank out, the heater will come on at 75*, and the windows wont work. I saw somewhere that there is a dashboard cts that controls the dash voltage but dont know if thats the problen or where its at. PLEASE HELP.

Hi mil usos,

Thank you for the donation.

Here are the procedures for retrieving trouble codes. Check if any trouble codes are present.

RETRIEVING & CLEARING DTCS

NOTE: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for other systems can also be retrieved during this procedure. Only information related to IPC diagnosis is covered in this article.

Retrieving DTCs

1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. On analog IPC, press OFF and passenger warmer (up arrow) buttons on Climate Control Panel (CCP) until all segments of display are illuminated. On digital IPC, press OFF and warmer (Red bar) buttons on Climate Control Center (CCC) until all segments of display are illuminated.

2. On all models, Driver Information Center (DIC) will display all set DTCs (current or history). DTCs will be displayed in the following order: PCM, IPC, ACM, SDM, TCS, RSS, PZM, IRC, RFA, CCP, MSM, MMM and PHN. Pressing FAN DOWN button will by-pass DTC display.

Clearing Codes.

IPC CLEAR CODES option can be used to clear stored IPC DTCs. When selected, IPC CLEAR CODES option immediately erases all DTCs stored to that point and DIC displays IPC CODES CLEAR. Once a malfunction has been corrected, clear DTCs so future service is not duplicated. After DTC has been cleared, it is necessary to verify proper system operation. To ensure system is operating properly, duplicate conditions under which DTC was originally set and recheck for codes.

Sounds like you have a battery, or charging system issue. You say the battery has normal voltage, what is the normal voltage? What is the voltage at the battery with the engine running and loads on?
