Trying to diagnose poor fuel economy recently (down 20%). No trouble codes. Checked all the obvious. How can I check that I'm getting adequate spark advance, just a hunch?
Also, when checking distributor pick-up coil resistance, the ohm reading displays momentarily, in a flash, it doesn't remain on ohm meter display. Is this normal?

The computer controls timing so you should stop messing with that stuff. All you can do is harm.

Have you done the basics such as checking base ignition timing, spark plugs, air filter and idling speed? When was the oil last changed?

The distributor pick-up coil should show constant resistance when using an ohmmeter to test.

Dont forget O2 sensors adjust the air/fuel mix, if not performing, mileage will suffer.
