I was driving on the highway and I heard a "pop"-like sound and the car stalled. It will not restart. Could this be a sign that the engine has blown?

Broken timing belt. You have an engine problem but didn't state the size. There are four different engines available. Some of them are "interference" engines meaning when the timing belt breaks the open valves will be hit and bent by the pistons as they coast to a stop. That will require a valve job and new cylinder head gasket along with the new timing belt.
