WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO START MY PICKUP IT STARTS...

When I turn the key to start my pickup it starts fine but as soon as I release the key to the run pos. It dies. If I hold the key in start pos. And put tranny in gear (so neutral cutoff switch cuts power to the starter) it will continue to run, and drive as normal untill I release the key from start to run. I suspected the ignition so I bypassed it (I.E. Hotwired the rig) and the same thing, hot wire to coil hot to starter starts no problem, untill I remove hot to starter then dies?

Check your ballast resistor on firewall they are normally the cause of this. It is a white retangular ceramic piec with one bolt in it.
