Hello,

In order to fix your timing belt you will need to take the front of the motor apart. I would suggest replacing all timing components and the water pump while in there.

The timing belt broke going down the highway at 65mph what are the chances that it bent a valve and how if it didnt do you set the timing on the car?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
TIMING BELT
Removal
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belt and automatic tensioner. Support engine with floor jack. Remove engine mount at timing belt end of engine.
Remove 2 engine mount-to-bracket bolts. Loosen engine mount through bolt. Rotate engine mount out of way. Remove retaining nuts and timing belt cover.
Rotate crankshaft and align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with timing mark on cylinder head. See Fig. 1. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with oil pump housing timing mark.
Loosen belt tensioner retaining bolt. Pry belt tensioner away from timing belt and tighten retaining bolt. See Fig. 2. Install mount at timing belt end of engine to support engine.
Remove spark plugs. Raise and support vehicle. Remove retaining bolt and crankshaft damper. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed.

If removing camshaft sprocket, remove retaining bolt and camshaft sprocket. If removing crankshaft sprocket, pull sprocket from crankshaft.
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed. If camshaft must be rotated, install crankshaft pulley and position crankshaft with cylinder No. 1 at 90 degrees BTDC.

Installation
Install camshaft sprocket if removed. Tighten retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Install crankshaft sprocket if removed. Install timing belt over sprockets in counterclockwise direction, starting at crankshaft.
CAUTION:Maintain tension on timing belt between crankshaft and camshaft sprockets when installing belt over remaining sprockets.

Loosen belt tensioner retaining bolt. Allow belt tensioner to apply tension on timing belt.
Rotate crankshaft 2 full revolutions clockwise and realign timing marks. DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise. Tighten belt tensioner retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification.

Hi I have a ford escort 1.8 16 v xr3i with the twin cam zetec and have replaced the twin cams but when putting it cams back on the head have now found out that theres timing marks on the cams is there anyway of telling how the cams are meant to sit by the way the loabs are sitting

Here's a few diagrams to help, remember, dont rotate the engine with the old belt removed! Align marks first, crank mark aligns with oil pum mark, cam aligns with cyl head mark...

Your advice seems to be for the 1.9L but I'm not sure why Ford tells you NOT to rotate the engine with the belt removed since this engine is of the non-interference type. In fact, if he broke the belt, the engine and/or cam pulley must be rotated to align the two.

That may be true, but if it is an interferance motor, you would remove the rocker arms first.

how do I time the cam. Related to the TDC. Timing belt stripped out. Teeth stripped. Cam and valves are not timed to the TDC of #1 piston.

Have you checked no valves are bent before you re-time the vehicle ???

CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed.

CAUTION:DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed. If camshaft must be rotated, install crankshaft pulley and position crankshaft with cylinder No. 1 at 90 degrees BTDC.

Installation
