Question: 1999 Toyota Celica,
mileage: 126,000. I am having a problem with
the sunroof. It will open with the up switch
but not with the slide. All I hear when you
depress the button is a clicking sound that
the relay is making. You have to manually
screw the roof closed. I manually opened the
roof and it would partially close, but not
run the other direction. Now the motor is 12
volt, so I assume that open or closing, all
it is doing is reversing the polarity of the
motor to get it to run in the opposite
direction. It will open in the roof up
button, but only close in the slide mode. My
guess is that it is in the relay, but that
unit is $300.00 from Toyota. I would like to
find out for sure before putting out money
for no just cause. Any suggestions?
Answer:
We would suggest isolating the wires that go
to the sunroof motor and applying 12 volts
and ground to verify that the motor is
working properly. If it works in one
direction, switch the wires to verify that
it works in the other direction, fully
closing and opening the sunroof. If the
motor checks out okay, then the relay is
your problem.
Question:
1999 Honda Accord, mileage: 100,000.
The moon roof on my accord leaks but
otherwise it seems to function fine.
The dealership said the entire assembly must
be replaced. Seems expensive and
unnecessary. Is there a seal kit
available? Is it difficult to access?
Anywhere to get instructions for accessing
this area?
Answer:
The best thing to do is check with a Honda dealer and
see if they can order one. Simply remove the head liner
to replace sunroof motor with new reassemble to recheck
operation.
Question:
1998 BMW 325i, mileage: 115,000. I rolled down the
windows on my car and let the sunroof back. For
some reason the sunroof or any windows in the car will
not move. I have tried all the window locks and
they won't work and looked at the fuses and none are
blown. If you have any info, Please help me.
Answer:
Your car is equipped with a body control module.
It controls the windows, door locks, sunroof etc.
Scanning the BCM will tell you the fault codes to
pinpoint the malfunctioning component. Replace as need
to repair problem.
Question: 2001 Mercedes C230
mileage: 71,000. I hope you can help. My problem
is that my sunroof is stuck open and I can't get it to
close. When I told my husband about the problem he just
sat there and said those five little words that I dread
"honey take it to the dealer" oh please do you have any
idea what a hassle it is to take my car to the dealer.
Well let me tell you the last time I had to take it in
to the dealer took me three hours to just drop it off
and get a rental car and I had an appointment. So please
if you could e-mail me back with some information for my
husband that would be great. Thank you so much!
Answer: We can understand your
husband’s response. But ere are some things you can look
at first. Check system fuses, also inspect the switch
contacts, (clean as needed) try rocking the switch back
and forth rapidly, this can break the motor free and let
it work again.
