PCM - Power Train Control Module - This category contains featured questions
as examples. They relate to most vehicles.
(Note: In most cases the ECM and PCM are the same thing)
Question: 2005 Ford Freestar mileage: 72,200. Fault code 0386 is active. "Crankshaft
position sensor B circuit range/performance” I have done the following with no luck.
1. Installed a new CKP sensor. 2. Checked the two wires from the CKP to the ICM.
3. I check the output voltage to the sensor and according to my Haynes manual; I
should have measured battery voltage at the CKP sensor with the key ON. I only got
1.5 volts. 4. I check power and ground to the ECM -- checked OK. 5. I then replaced
the ECM with one from a junkyard. 6. The problem is fault code 386 keeps coming
up and I still only measure 1.5 volts at the CKP sensor. The engine still runs rough
and if I erase the fault code it will return with in 1/2 mile of driving. If I erase
it when I am driving it pops right back up. Am I missing something, is my new ECM
bad or is the book wrong. Thanks,Answer: 1.5 It sounds like you may have
a circuit shorted to ground. Recheck the wires that go to the CKP sensor to test
the ohm's to ground. If you have any reading to ground the computer thinks the sensor
is shorted. Repair wiring as needed to repair problem.
Question: 2001 GMC Yukon mileage: 47,000. What type of chip is required,
and recommended for my truck?
Answer: We commend the factory computer chip for stock applications.
Question: 2001 Ford Taurus, miles: 94,000. Can you give me any information
on the brain in the dashboard? Like how to put it back together. It has been at
a garage for four months. They said it was the brain and would cost over 800.00
dollars to fix. I don't have that kind of money. Any information would be greatly
appreciated.
Answer: Are you sure there is something wrong with the "brain" (power
control module - PCM) -- it usually does not go bad. Most likely one of the components
that feed the PCM or that the PCM controls is malfunctioning. Scan for trouble codes
to replace shorted sensor as needed.
Question: 1999 Olds Cutlass Cierra Brough 3.8L mileage: 200,000. My problem
is the EMC fuse keeps blowing; sometimes it may last 5 minutes and then other times
it may blow with the switch being turned on the crank mode. Do you have any suggestion
that may help me?
Answer: Check the wiring loom for damage or to see if it is shorted
out. In addition, you may possibly have a bad PCM (power control module), which
is the same thing as an ECM.
Question: 2002 Toyota Avalon. mileage: 84,000. Car is hard to keep running.
When checked on scanner it shows that injector drivers 1 and 2 bad. I replaced the
PCM but still shows same problem.
Answer: When you replaced the PCM you should also replace the fuel injectors
related to that circuit.
