Car Gas Tank Question and Answer

This category contains featured questions as examples. They relate to most vehicles.

Question: 2002 Lincoln Towncar mileage: 96,000. This morning my car was vandalized. Gas was sucked out of my tank. It was full but they took about 1/2 tank. I drove the car to my office and it died out several times. I took it to the dealership and they hooked it up the computer and said it was fine. Later in route to my office it died again, a fellow employee loosened the gas cap to discover that there had been sugar put in the tank. Now the car won't start. What can be done, if anything? Please help.

Answer: The fuel injectors are probably plugged. You will have to go through the fuel system, starting with the tank and going forward. Additionally, contact your insurance company to see if you have vandalism insurance.

Question: 2003 Lincoln Mark VIII mileage: 40,000. I can't fill the tank. The nozzle keeps clicking off. I took off the vapor recovery line at the tank, didn't help. I can't find the vent line.

Answer: Your car should be equipped with a vent hose located right next to the main fill pipe. When you find it, check to make sure it is not kinked or plugged.

Question: 2002 Dodge Caravan mileage: 55,000.  When filling tank to Full, the smell of gas inside the car is almost unbearable. How can I fix?

Answer: You probably have a leak in the fill pipe that goes from the gas cap to the tank.  There is also a possibility that you have a leak in the top of the gas tank.  Have it checked out and fixed by a reputable automobile service center.

Question: 2004 Toyota Camry, miles: 36,000  I recently bought this car and whenever it rains, the car doesn't run once I have been driving for about ten minutes.  It runs fine after I put in a can of dry gas.  I was wondering if I have a hole in my gas tank.  Someone had told me that it might be the distributor cap but since the dry gas helps I don't think that is the problem.  Will the dry gas damage my engine?

Answer: A reasonable amount of Dry Gas added to the gas tank should not hurt your engine.  It sounds as if you have a gas tank vent that has somehow opened allowing rainwater to get in.  Check all vent gas hoses to if any are split or disconnected.   Also, check the gas fill pipe for a leak.

Question: 2002 Mazda 3 mileage: 30,907.  Where do I find the gas filter to change it.  What exactly do I do to fix the car if someone accidentally put diesel instead of gas in the tank and drove a couple miles until it stopped?

Answer: The gas filter is probably in the rear of the car by the gas tank.  Now, on to the diesel problem.  Remove as much diesel fuel as possible from the gas tank and refill it with gasoline.   You may have to crank the car to purge the diesel fuel out of the fuel lines.  After that, it should start and run okay.  There should be no damage to the engine from the diesel fuel.
