Had my Jeep for about a year and rarely drive it. It misses, we thought it was the distributer it s not, it will idle all day in the driveway but when you are driving it misses and the motor will die when you go to shift, when you come back up using compression it will start again but runs horribly and wont idle after driving. Dropped the gas tank and put in a new fuel filter, removed the carburetor and replaced it with a single barrel autoline c 6214. It has new plug wires, brand new distributer, new plugs, new fuel pump, fuel lines cleaned and cleared, new fuel filter in tank, also a new air cleaner. Can't get the carburetor to idle what are the adjustments and do you think this is the problem, I am at a loss.

Check for a vacuum leak and check compression. Check plug wires and correct firing order. Also check for a cracked dist cap

ALRIGHTY THEN

LET'S HEAR THE RESULTS OF WHAT Hmac300 SUGGESTED TO CHECK

LOST/ DON'T KNOW HOW?

GOTCHU COVERED, JUST LET US KNOW

YOUR "4.2" IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS MANY OF THE AMC CARS HAD, AND BEST-US OF ALL WHAT MANY OF THE '76-'86 CJs HAVE

DO YOU HAVE SOME OF THE TOOLS TO TEST/ OR TUNE? KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND UNDER THE HOOD? UNDERSTAND HOW THIS STUFF WORKS?

I'VE BEEN 100% CJ-ing SINCE 1981, AIN'T TOO MUCH SNEAKS BY ME, MOST OF THE TIME THE PROBLEM IS NOT TO HARD TO FIX (RUNNING-WISE) UNLESS THERE IS SOME KIND OF MECHANICAL DAMAGE INVOLVED (HENCE THE "WANT TO KNOW" HOW THE COMPRESSION TEST GOES

LAST NIGHT I HAD TO HELP MY PAL SNATCH HIS ENGINE OUT OF HIS 1949 WILLYS, TONIGHT WE'RE SNATCHING OUT THE TRANNY AND TRANSFER CASE (SHOULD BE A LOT EZier!) SO I PROBABLY WILL BE BACK ON HERE LATER TONIGHT

SPILL YOUR GUTS, ANY NON-OEM MODIFICATIONS BEEN MADE? TOOLS? ABILITIES?

BELOW: 1st PIC MY '46 ON LEFT ("WILLY") MY PALS '48 ON RIGHT ("BABY")

2nd PIC ME AND BABY'S HEART (LAST NIGHT)

3rd PIC-NO BRAINER

YOUR TURN

Sorry I have not been checking these messages I was waiting for a notification in my e-mail account. All I have done since my previous post is switched out the coil. The problems really started when I had the carburetor switched from a 2 barrel to a single barrel. I drove it home from the mechanic and couldn't get it over 40 miles and hour. I attempted to set the carburetor and now it barely runs any more I will try the above and see it any of that works, I think it is just a simple adjustment I am not the best mechanic but am learning, quickly between this page and u-tube videos I might have a chance.

REASON(S) FOR DOWNGRADING TO A SINGLE BARREL? (SPILL YOUR GUTS!)

DID YOU CHANGE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD?

IF NOT, HOW DID YOU ADAPT IT FOR THE ONE BARREL TO FIT?

SINGLE BARREL- WHAT KIND, WHAT DID IT COME OFF OF/ OR WHAT ENGINE/ VEHICLE WAS IT MEANT FOR?

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU SPENT ON THIS PUPPY (PARTS/ WORK) THUS FAR?

3RD PIC- YOUR PREVIOUS CRAPOLA CARB?

YOU MAY HAVE KNOCKED ON THE RIGHT DOOR, DEPENDING ON YOUR ANSWERS

LAST,

MOST IMPORTANUS

SOMEBODY SCREWS AROUND WITH THE BUTTONS AT 2CARHQ FROM TIME TO TIME

I'M NOT GETTING NOTIFIED AT THE PRESENT TIME EITHER, I PLAY HECK JUST TRYING TO FIND THE MOST RECENT ONES I'VE ANSWERED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY ACTIVITY, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO TRACK DOWN OLDER ONES THAT SOMETIMES GET "NEW" HITS. IN THE PAST, I HAVE SEEN THIS SITUATION HAPPEN AND A FEW DAYS LATER GET OVERRUN WITH THE NOTIFICATIONS.

KEEP CHECKING BACK, MAYBE IT'LL GET FIXED SOON, I'LL KEEP UP WITH MY JEEP QUESTIONS FOR SURE. AS FAR AS THE OTHER VEHICLES, THE OTHER GUYS WILL KEEP THEM AT BAY!

Sorry guys I have not had time to look at your suggestions. Love the jeep she is a beauty, but I am old and totally not a mechanic and am completely lost with this. I have so much into this way more that I will ever see, I am contacting my BIL to see if there is a good jeep guy in the area. I have pimped this jeep out to, to many mechanics was over charged and half the stuff I asked to do hasn't been done. So now it is tough to track down what the real problem is. Ran when I got it now it will barely start, most of the problem started when I insisted on putting a single barrel carburetor on, had to track down my own air cleaner after the mechanic was done making a mess of the carburetor he told me he couldn't find an air cleaner and I would have to go on the internet to get that myself, and didn't give me back the other carburetor I have no idea what was on it. Everyone who sees it falls in love and wants to buy it until you start it up, then they walk away.
