2000 Chrysler town and country. Another mechanic had replaced the head gasket it no longer starts. Checked all the normal issues. Can hear loud clicking from the relay box. I plugged a obdll code scanner to it and it will start and run fine. Throws no codes. But if you unplug the scanner. It will not run. Why will it only start and run with code scanner connected?

Try resetting anti theft unit first then have a pro scan it. If no manual look online

I had a similar condition with my 2001 voyager. It wouldn't start unless I had the OBD2 scanner connected. In my case, the thin ground wire that comes off the negative battery terminal was not getting a good ground do to corrosion. I had to remove battery and battery box to reach the ground point under the battery on the fender. After cleaning this connection point, the van started with no more problems.
