When I put my van in gear there is rattling behind the engine

There is a rattle coming from somewhere behind the engine when I put my van in reverse or drive. The rattle stops when it's in park or neutral.

Sometimes when I am backing up the van it will hop or act like it is misfiring. When I've been driving for a while it seems to want to die. If it does die, it starts right back up and if I give it a lot of gas it will kick right out of it and drive normal again for a while. It is especially bad after idling. Any idea what this could be?

Edit: Here's a better way of wording my question -

When I shift van into gear (either D, R, L1, L2) but not in neutral and sit in one spot with the brake pedal depressed there is an awful rattling noise. It does not occur in park or neutral with the brake depressed. The rattling seems to be causing drag on the engine as the idle will drop down. It's almost as if every drive pulley is seizing up. This does not happen if I hold brake down while in park or neutral.

Also there seems to be fluid leaking. Possibly transmission fluid.

From your description, it sounds like the flywheel may be cracked. It houses the crank sensor as well and could be causing the stalling issues as well
