Along with the popping noise, there seems to be a faint rubbing sound from the front end of the vehicle.

Is the clicking coming from the column or under the vehicle? Does it only happen when making a sharp turn?

There is a joint that connects the steering column to the rack, but I never heard of this problem. If the problem is coming from outside, it could be related to the CV joints.

If you are certain it is the column, the best you can do is inspect the joint that attaches to the rack.

Just to add to this one I have heard of the intermediate shaft the joint that connects the steering column to the rack and pion make noise on those cars. You really cant visually see anything wrong from the ones I have come across. I just unhooked it from the rack and pion and pumped it up and down 3 or four 4 times to move the grease around if the noise changes or goes away I knew it was the intermediate shaft. If it doesnt it still be that but its one way to eliminate that. Also the clunking in the front end if your going slow and just kind swerve back and forth can you hear it?I have replaced a lot of sway bar bracket bushings for that.
