Tailgate on 06 - will not open

2006 Volvo XC70 All Wheel Drive Automatic 104000 miles
The tailgate on my 2006 XC70 unlock or open.
This problem all started after a small wooden dowel got jamed between bottom of the tailgate and the bottom of the tailgate opening when I loaded it into back after purchasinf it at a Home Store. The jammed dowel prevented the tailgate from opening or closing at the time. I was able to pull the dowel out and close the tailgate, but no it will not open. I want to fix it myself if I can, but I am not sure where to start other than to check the fuse.
