2003 Volvo S80 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100,00 miles

Over the past 2-3 months when I stop to get gas, I have to fill the tank very slowly or else the pump shuts off. I took it for service in the past few days and asked them to look at this problem. They suggested I go to a Volvo dealership (this place is where I bought the car and sells, Saabs and Caddys). One guy told me that the fumes might be backing up and blocking a free flow of fuel into the tank. I am at the point of barely squeezing the pump handle to let gas nearly dribble into the tank. Is this a common problem? Any thoughts? Take it to a dealership?
