Volvo Transmission Popping Out of Overdrive

1991 Volvo 740; 4-cylinder; 177K miles - After driving my car for a while, the transmission pops out of 4th gear (overdrive) and will not go back in. This problem seems to be temperature dependent... Takes longer to slip out of gear when it's cold outside; less driving time when it's warmer. Help? - Susan Hobbs, Indianapolis

I have a 1991 940 GLE 197K miles with exactly the same problem.
Any one have a solution?

Check to make sure that your overdrive relay is operable, or making contact. In the 740 you will find it in the second row of relays far right (toward glove box) behind the ashtray.
