1989 Volvo 740 smoke from exhaust no power

1989 Volvo 740 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 112000 miles
was accelerating to get off exit on highway... engine sounds like put putting... thought it wa smuffler but smoke from under hood then car wouldnt start and smoke from exhaust and no power dont want to sink a lot of money any idea - gasket?
