1988 Volvo 240 Repair Question

1988 Volvo 240 240 hard start
Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Volvo 240 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 210000 miles
1988 Volvo 240 with LH fuel injection - intermittent slow or no start problem - engine spins but no start - checked pressure at rail and all ok and will hold pressure for >20 min. Sometimes car wont start after hot soak or when parked nose uphill- no fuel smell in exhaust after 30 seconds cranking - holding to floor does not help. Spray starter fluid in airbox and engine fires right up and runs well. Suspect check valve at fuel pump, but pressure held when gauges attached....possible intermittent check valve failure? Just thought you might know of some common "Volvoisim" that causes this same issue. My Volvo mechanics are killing me with parts replacement and problem persists.
