1974 Volvo 240 ignition timming

setting ignition timming with timming light when i set the timming i adjusted it to 10 degrees btdc i went over to about 12 degrees i moved the distributer back 2 degrees to 10 then it was set right at 10 at 800rpm but engine cut out . but if i set it to 12degrees then move back to 0 then move to 10 the engine is fine so why does it cut out if i just move it back 2 degrees? if you can answer this one then your a beter mecanic than i i have 20 years in the trade .
