1983 Volkswagen Van Some bits fell out of my alternator - c

1983 Volkswagen Van 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual
Hi - I had cause to remove my alternator from a 1983 T25 VW van because I need to fit a replacement mounting bracket. When I took the alternator off, something was rattling around inside it. I tipped it on its back and these pieces of a component fell out. Can anyone identify it and tell me what the implications are for my alternator?
