I have a 2003 VW Passat 1.8 turbor 4 cylinder. I just replaced the air filter and 4 ignition coils. After they were replaced, the fuel gauge immediately started to give false readings. When before they were replaced the digital readout said I had 75 miles before next fill up. After driving 1 mile the readout was 30 miles and gave me the refuel indicator warning. Plus the fuel gauge itself dropped to the empty line which prompted the readout to flash refuel. This seems like more than a coincidence and related to the changing of the coils or filter.

thanks.

Hi there, did you sort your problem, I have a similar query,
I was driving along nicely when I looked at the fuel gauge and it was steadily rising from the 1/4 I knew I had, to full. Now it reads full when nearly empty, after filling up it now reads empty. This happened all of a sudden, along with failure of water t/stat.
I would be interested to know if you got yours sorted. Thx Jan

I have the same vehicle, 2003 VW Passat and had the same problem. I took it into my VW mechanic and they reset the computer for me, after which the fuel tank reader took about five fillups to even out. Hope you got your figured out. But it took me a few phone calls after I had it in to figure this out.
