I drive ~40,000 miles per year, and keep my cars for 200,000 miles. I live in northern Vermont, so I drive in a lot of "weather". I carefully maintain my cars so that I can count on them - I find myself in very isolated places, often in harsh weather conditions, and am willing do what's needed to keep my car reliable. That said, I spend A LOT of time in the shop doing regular maintenance.

So. I've been reading about synthetics, particularly AMSOIL, and their 25,000 mile guarantee (oil + filter, .). What do you think of this? Are there other items that need more frequent maintenance?

I am about to buy a CC, and I'd really love a maintenance plan where I only need a service every 20,000 miles without sacrificing reliability. Although I don't want to go overboard, I am not doing this to save money (although that would be nice!). I am doing it to save time.

Ok I do not beleive the claim of 25000 miles between changes. I would say that if you use synthetic oil that you can stretch out you oil changes(changing the oil filter with ever oil change) to about 7500 miles if it is all highway driving. Sythetic oils also reduce wear and increase mileage and hp so you gain. Other then that you could put in a K&N washable air filter this will also increase mpg and you don't buy air filters any more you clean it. Other then that go by manufactures recommendations. Hope this helps.

Why do you not believe the claims? AMSOIL guarantees their results, and from what I've discerned, Mobil 1 is fairly equivalent. Do you have specific knowledge of problems with extended use?

Beyond oil, are there other items that need to be changed/serviced more than once every 20k miles? Thanks for the K&N suggestion.

My driving is mainly highway driving with the cruise control on.

Thanks.

As a schooled and trained mechanic call me older schooled but guarantees or not how can a filter go 25000 and keep the engine clean? A filter is built with only so many micron filtration therefore can filter so many particals. Now with that I change my oil about every 7500 using synthetic oil and my engines are clean inside. I also got a 8hp gain out of my Mustang and about 4% increase in mpg. I do have a mechanic friend (owns his own shop) that use to use Amsoil and after 8000 in costs to him in replacing the engine and finding that the oil still brock down he pulled it out of his shop.
