2001 Other Volkswagen Models Key stuck in ignition and shift

2001 Other Volkswagen Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 66000 miles
The center console shift has a button on the side that you must compress to shift between gears. After compressing and shifting gears it is supposed to pop back out. It does not pop back out after switching gears and I believe because of this the key will not come out of the ignition. An safety interlock of some kind. How can I get the button to pop back out so I can remove my key from the ignition?
