1980 Other Volkswagen Models IGNITION TIMING

I PUT NEW POINTS,CAP,ROTOR AND WIRES ON THIS 1980 DASHER MOTOR. NOW IT SOUNDS LIKE TIMING IS OFF. SPUTTERS AND BACKFIRES WITHOUT STARTING.DO I NEED TO SET THE TIMING? HOW DOES DISTRIBUTOR LOOSEN TO DO THIS?

if you did not touch the timing I don't think that's your problem, tell me what you set the point gap at?
