Timing belt

Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 120000 miles

I had a mechanic take a look at it. He tells me the timing belt needs to be replaced plus the valves are probably damaged?
Are these two related and if so, do both need to be replace/fixed for car to run properly. My engine light is also on?

If your vehicle is equipped with an interferrence engine and the timing belt is damaged/loose then this will cause valve damage as well. You will need both replaced or further damage will occur resulting in having to replace the engine or have it completely rebuilt. Need to have diagnostic trouble codes scanned to see why the engine code is illuminated.
