2000 Volkswagen Jetta driver's side mirror adjustment knob

2000 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 118000 miles
the manual adjustment knob for my driver's side mirror has broken - I have gotten a replacement knob. It appears that it fits underneath the panel for the door latch and lock. What is the proper approach to removing that panel ?
