I just bought a 1999 Jetta VR6 and the tach and speedo are not working. Where do I start?

I just repaired that on my 97 Jetta GLX. Had to replace the electric switch mounted to the key switch in the steering column. Is not a job for the faint hearted. Had to pull the steering column to gain some elbow room. Used my dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to grind some deeper groves in the hub that must be pulled off to r&r the ignition switch. Will need a good sturdy 3 jaw gear puller.

Thanks for the info.I talked to a vw dealership and they are telling me I need a whole new gauge cluster without even looking at it. This sounds much more cost effective. I will try it first.
Thanks again.
