1996 Volkswagen GTI Anti-theft system

1996 Volkswagen GTI 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 195000 miles
Is there a way to disable the anti-theft system without disconnecting the battery?
My driver door handle is broken and the system is still on and i cannot shut it off to go to get repaired.
The driver door key and lock is the only way i can deactivate the anti-theft system. As far as I know anyway.
