1998 Volkswagen Golf Is it worth repairing?

Engine Performance problem
1998 Volkswagen Golf 108000 miles

I left my car in for a service and the mechanic told me that the engine and clutch are both gone. I was schocked as I never have had any problems with it. He said ihe was not interested in repairing it as it would cost too much and he would not discuss it further. I have always looked after the car.

Can you help, please?
