Engine Mechanical problem
1972 Volkswagen Beetle 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Hi I have just replaced the air filter and crankshaft pulley on my 72 beatle, after putting the new ones on and putting it back together, and starting it, it just does not sound right it sounds alot rougher and that I think some thing might be grinding or rubbing. Any ideas. Please help!

I assume you've turned the engine over manually checking the pulley for any rubbing against the shrouding. I can't remember whether the oil slinger on the crankshaft extends any way through the case. I do seem to recall a washer behind the pulley bolt.

It just seems most likely something's not quite right with the way the pulley is on there. Maybe the hub is somehow rubbing against the case.
