2003 Vauxhall Astra Burning Oil

Hi - I have recently purchased a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8 valve of 03 reg with a mileage of 65000 miles. After 2 days i have noticed there was no engine oil remaining in car as shown in dipstick. I have top it up and still after 5 days there was problem in car, car sudddenly stops and speedometer doesnt work showing speed of zero miles. I have topped the engine oil for a quarter of oil in car, car runs again and then speedometer again started running. But after few minutes speedometer falls again to zero, and car started burning oil as there was huge smell through exhaust( black . i cant understand where is problem, still there ws no oil leakage sign on road. Please waiting for reply
