2001 Vauxhall Astra car not accelerating above 78 mph

2001 Vauxhall Astra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 81000 miles

Hi

I am from the UK and i am driving a vauxhall astra 1.6l engine.

Recently I was driving on the motorway and accelerating to about 70 mph. I then began to overtake someone in the middle lane and as I was increased my acceleration to about 78 mph...the car began decelrating as if I had lifted my foot off the pedal, even though I still had my foot firmly pressed.

I had to allow it to decelerate back down to 70mph before taking it up again to 75mph

It has also been REALLY cold in this country so would that have anything to do with it?

Thanks
