I have a 1994 Ford Aerostar. When driving on the freeway at 65mph +/- in overdrive.
The transmission will randomly downshift into drive and stay in that gear.
Sometimes, (after a few minuets) it will then randomly up shift back into OD, but this is rare.
When it downshifts out of OD, nothing I do (use the column to shift into other gears and back, into neutral and back) will make it up shift back into OD when I return to that gear.
Now here is the only thing that works.
When the transmission (randomly) down shifts into drive, I can get it to up shift back into OD, by stepping down on the accelerator, but as soon as I let off slightly, it downshifts again immediately.
To me it feels like it is a vacuum signal issue but I don't know anything about this vehicle/trans characteristics

The trans was rebuilt by one shop, and the problem continued.
A year later I had it rebuilt by a more competent shop. The problem continues.
