I have a 1993 tercel and have to replace the RF drive axle. I have the new axle and need to know if I have to split open the transaxle case to access the C-clip on the end of the axle that goes into the transaxle. If not, how do I access the clip?

When you say clip, are you talking about the ring on the end of the drive axle that you will insert inside the transmisssion. If it is, then here is how. I have installed new drive axles to few cars including my former 94 tercel. The clip or ring is just a retainer or lock to keep the drive axle not to separate from the transmission. If you use a pryer or axle puller, the clip will come out automatically with drive axle. That is why it is a little hard to remove the old drive axle because of this clip. If you use a big pryer, just be careful when you pry it out not to damage the transmission housing or the oil seal. If you have an axle puller, you don't need to worry about this problem.
Check the new drive axle that you bought with the new ring or clip attached to the groove. When you pull or pry out the old one, it will be the same. The old clip or ring will still be in place on the groove.
When you put the new axle in, it will be a little hard to insert it in because of the clip. Give it a little force, it will go in.
