I have a 1986 toyota tercel with a 1.3 litre engine, 5 speed manual transmission, hatchback, canadian model. approximate mileage is 126000 km.

My transmission seems to be stuck in 4th gear, the shifter appears and acts as if it is neutral, moves from side to side like it should in neutral, only transmission won't disengage. wondering how to get my transmission linkage to disengage out of 4th gear into neutral and also how to fix the problem. note: shifter moves side to side like its in neutral, but very little play up and down ie. like going from 3rd to 4th. any information on how to correct this problem would be appreciated. thanks
