Suddenly one day I noticed a weird smell like gas and the AC started not cooling as usual and the next day the AC started to blow hot air. What could this be? Could it just need Freon? I was told by a mechanic that an AC doesn't just run out of freon. If it does it's due to a leak. So putting freon isn't going to solve anything. Does an AC run out of freon without necessarily having a leak? Also, I'm concerned that it can be the compressor or something expensive to repair. Which I can't afford now.

Please help to guide me. I'm in a financial crisis and living in Florida's 90' degree summer heat I need to have AC. Thank You

Hi Chiara,

Thank you for the donation.

No, the AC does not run out of gas as the system is sealed and gas would be contained. Only leakages would cause the gas level to go low.

You would need to check if it is gas that has leaked out or the AC compressor that is not working due to electrical or mechanical faults.

To check the gas level, a pressure gauge would be required. Try asking at your local parts outlets, they might be able to assist.
