Check Engine Light

I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander V6 with approx 63k miles. No leaks no noises nothing out of the ordinary. Had check engine light and dealer said it was related to the evaporative emission system. He needs to replace the charcoal canister. Price with labor $695.00. What does this system/part do and is this reasonable? Thanks.

Nothing is reasonable when it comes to money and cars :x :roll: . It does sound about right, that probably includes diagnostic time and tax. The Evaporative system is used to prevent hydrocarbons from entering the atmosphere from the fuel evaporating. The charcoal cannister retains the fuel vapors and releases them to be burned.
