Replace 93 Toyota Corolla engine?
1993 toyota Corolla wagon, 270,000 miles, automatic.
Running rough and using oil. Mechanic said it has bad compression on one valve and suggested I replace it with an engine from Japan, which he said they replace at 40K. Is that true, and if so, why? At $1500-1800, would this be a reasonable thing to do?
Thank you.

Common in Japan. Emissions thing, they dont work on anything, just replace it. Be careful though, there sometimes are very minor differences in the Japanese and American engines that can be a pain when swapping over. In general they are a good, cheap way to go
