Automatic transmission 3 speed
Dear bob and ken
i have purchased a toyota corolla 1991 with 1.6L, which is automatic transmission, dont have the manual for it with the owner, but i feel its 3 speed instead of 4 speed, how can i check if its 3 speed or 4 speed please, it does not have the mark like SE or LX etc, can you please let me know thanks a lot.

Toyota used the A131L (3 speed) and the A240 (4 speed) automatics.
The 3 speed will shift twice and the 4 speed will shift 3 times.
There is an ID plate on the tranny directly below the throttle body (more than likely very dirty), get the numbers off it and check the owners manual for codes. If it doesn't have them listed, give tranny number to a Toyota dealer and see if he will tell you.

The 3 spd has a 15 bolt pattern and the 4 spd doesn't... Hope this helps!
