I was driving, doing about 70 with cruise control on, the car lost power/quit running with a brief spike in rpm, as I pulled over to the shoulder, the engine when completely dead. When I tried to restart it immediately, there was almost no reaction, maybe a slight turn or two and a subtle whirring noise with the dash lights going dim as I cranked. If I wait an hour or so the car will barely start up with some rumbling then quickly shuts off soon after. At most I can get it to go a hundred yards or so if I pump the gas a bit, but then rumbling and dying out happens soon after. Oil was low. Any ideas? Thanks

Update: after charging the battery, I can start the car but it idles extremely poorly and likely shuts off with not enough or too much gas. Can't get up to speed and car shuts off quickly.

Let's start with the basics because it is not just a coincidence that the vehicle stalled and had an issue that appears to be battery related and now has a performance issue. Then you charge it and it now starts but still has a performance issue.

Let's take the battery to a parts store and they can load test it for you free of charge. A weak battery can cause all sorts of performance issue because the system requires a proper voltage to operate correctly.

Once we confirm the battery is good or replaced, we need to then retest the vehicle then find out if the parts store can perform an alternator test. Clearly we don't want to put a new battery in the vehicle if the alternator is not charging or it will drain the new battery as well.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-alternator

If all this checks out then we need to find out what codes are in the system and we can go from there.

Thanks

Hi there I have a 1800 VVTL-I (aka RSI RUNX in South Africa) hatch and I have been experiencing the following problem:

All electrics shuts down completely (engine, electrics, radio etc). No signs or warnings. It then switches on without me doing anything. It happened once when I was idling and a few times while driving, very intermittent, took the car for a diagnostic check and the only error code that came up was coil pack. Error code was then removed (nothing was done to the coil pack, only error removed) and still same problem.

Any advise on what the problem could be? As its driving me insane.

Cheers

Either a bad ignition switch or an intermittent short/open in the main engine fuse.

Thanks for the reply.
Where would I find the main engine fuse and do you think a ecu reset will help in any way?

Thanks

I would probably look at the ign. Switch. It sounds like the car is simply shutting off, like turning the key off, if this is the case, then I would lean toward ign. Switch.

Main relay is in fuse box in engine compartment and should be labeled "engine main".

Hello all,

It does not lose power or anything but just simply shuts off ( engine comes to a stall ), I can start it right again but shuts off immediately after no matter how much I try it shuts off (once it left me in the middle of nowhere and tried until the battery died ), but if I leave it few days it starts normally again as nothing happens and after some driving it shuts off again.

I have taken it to a few mechanics and they changed the fuel pump, battery, the disc clutches I think its called, the fuses, the oil and all the other stuff but the car still shuts off while driving.

Forgot to mention they also cleaned the MAF sensor and carburetor.

On testers no codes seem to show up.

I have attached a video of the engine and no, no one is at the driving wheel the engine just revs on its own. In the past in the morning I could not even start it in the morning the engine was stalling if I did not hit the gas pedal until the engine got hot. After I changed the fuel pump it starts and stays on but revs quite bad and still shuts off while driving.

Hi,

Has anyone checked the crankshaft position sensor? Do me a favor. Read through this link and let me know if it seems to mirror what you experience.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/symptoms-of-a-bad-crankshaft-sensor

When these sensors go bad, often times the fail after the engine is warm and the vehicle won't restart until it cools off.

When it doesn't start, check to see if there is spark to the plugs. If there is no spark, replace the sensor. Here is a link which explains how to test for spark:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

If you have a live data scanner, check to see if there is an RPM signal when it won't start. That is another way to check.

If you find there is no spark, here is a link that explains in general how to replace the sensor:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

I attached a pic below to help locate it.

Let me know what you find. I'm suspecting this component because it can fail and not set a code.

Take care,
Joe

Hello! My car has recently been hesitating and stalling shortly after I start it. Each of the occasions that it has stalled, the car had been sitting all day while I was at work or overnight and I had just reversed out of a parking space and shifted into drive. What could be causing this? I have recently had the spark plugs replaced and an oil change where all fluids were checked and okay. Will run for 20 minutes sometime less sometimes longer won't crank back the first time but usually the second time I try to start it then same thing over again Thank you!

Did the problem happen just after the plug replacement, that is the problem was not there before the plug replacement?

IF so, check the plug for the correct application, gap and that the wire have been installed firmly with a dielectric grease application.

Thank you so much for your reply.

The spark plug replacement was done after the car stalled initially. The guy I took the car to couldn't find anything wrong with it except for the plugs so he replaced them.

The car stalled the next morning and I took the car back to the mechanic who again couldn't find anything wrong and the car didn't stall for him. Since then I can feel it hesitating and today it stalled again as I pulled out of my parking space after work. Is there anything else it could be?

These cars had problems with the idle air control valve I would remove it and follow this guide.

Please let us know what you find.

Hi Nikki,

I got the same problem like you I think.

This morning, when I start my car, everything is okay. But few second after, it stalled. I tried again, the same thing. The 3rd time, everything is back to normal. No any difference feeling as before. Now I can drive as usual.

I followed the guide above and it fixed my problem.

Thanks.

Car died while sitting at a stop light and would not turn over.
It will turn over and start then dies. Acts like it's not getting fuel. We have replaced the fuel pump but still does the same thing.

Hi IMHALL14,

Here is a link to an article from this site that features written instructions and pictures showing and explaining the process of checking the fuel pressure yourself. If you decide you would like do this yourself you can purchase an inexpensive fuel pressure gauge online from sites like Amazon.com.

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.

Kindest regards,
