2000 Toyota Corolla check engine light

corolla ve 2000 has always used alot of oil. keep it topped off. dealer says i need a new engine. Am out of state and had it checked with a Toyota dealer..Normally do not use a dealership..My mechanic installed a rebuilt catalytic converter several months ago..What could the problem be..I was told my engine was oil starved.

The check engine light get it read and comeback with the code/s. As for the oil-could be a leak or an oil pressure problem.
