when you start the car do you have to re-charge the battery by driving a certain number of miles?

Yes you do-just running a short distance with stop and go type-the battery is not being recondition properly by the alternator-Remember the starter takes a lot of amperage to crank the engine and the alternator's job is to replace what was taking from the battery.
