1996 Toyota Corolla
1996 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 143000 miles
Driving to work in frigid Detroit, "check engine" light came on. Diagnostic said it was oxygen sensor. Driving home from the shop, the "check engine" light goes off...so, do I really need to replace it since arent there more than one anyway? Also, will not replacing it cause any damage to other components.

I would wait until the CEL comes back on. Get it checked again, and this time let us know the exact code(s) and description.
