1992 Toyota Corolla Starting problem

My car's coolent is consumed very fast. My mechanic says, the coolent goes into exhaust and as a result the car occasionally does not start.

Please let me know is it true what he says. Also please let me know what could be the estimated cost of repairing this faulst.
