There are a number of sensors on the engine, speed, cam & crank angle, knock, temp, mas air flow, pressure and the list goes on, they all work in a variety of ways some are heat sensitive, some pressure sensitive some position indicator (TPI) there are to many to be describing here, if you do a web search you should find all your answers.
